Welcome to Retro Dogfight

Hello, and welcome to Retro Dogfight! This is a new, monthly podcast dedicated entirely to classic combat sims of the past. While there are plenty of podcasts talking about things like Microsoft Flight Simulator and DCS — and that’s fine  for those who like that sort of thing — I couldn’t find a podcast talking about, what I feel, are the best flight sims ever made: those from the 80s and 90s especially.

So, I decided to make my own podcast, and I’ve roped in…ahem…I mean asked two old friends to join me. Besides me, we have Chase Dahl and Denny Atkin, both old hats in the flight sim community that have both written about sims professionally back in the day.

We’ll get the show started with some themed episodes (since a lot of these early sims are rudimentary enough that we’d likely not get a whole show out of them), but eventually the goal is to do one sim per show. In each episode, we’ll talk about our connection to the sims we talk about, what we liked about them, what we didn’t, and anything neutral/informational that we think of as we play them.

This show isn’t just a trip down memory lane either. We plan to wax and wane about game design, the people behind these sims, the evolution not just of the genre, but video games as a whole (of which flight sims have always been at the forefront) and much more.

So I would like to thank you, on behalf of us all, for visiting and checking us out. We hope to have a lot of fun with this new endeavor, and maybe open up these old sims to more people as we go.
